26 November 2008 | A bright future FutureMorph CD ROM
November sees the climax of a long and exciting project – the launch of the Science Council’s Futuremorph campaign. Months of work cumulating in the design and implementation of an interactive CD ROM, numerous teaching resources and various promotional materials. The aim of the campaign is to engage young people and encourage them to appreciate why they study science and maths in school and to understand the breadth of opportunities that are available to them. 1 October 2008 | The select few
Digital muusic consultancy Music Ally approach me to work with them on a fantastic new brief. The client is the British Council and the project the redesign of the website for their international radio show the Selector. Previously designed by Digit and cutting edge when launched it has become technically and visually dated. The brief is to produce a second generation (web 2.0) site, with streaming audio, podcasts, video and widgets for networking sites like Facebook - allowing the user to personalise their profile page. Launch due in December 2008.

19 September 2008 | Autumn colours IVAC brochure
The Islington based volunteering charity IVAC invite me to design their Autumn-Summer training programme guide. The result is a landscape format 14 page full colour brochure – using bright and bold colours and a strong cover image.

11 August 2008 | In sync
Sync Inc TV Independent music specialists Sync Inc commission me to design their website. Incorporating video and audio players, this HTML and Flash hybrid site targets creatives in advertising and film. The agency represents the likes of Coldcut and Booka Shade. The styling is raw and the concept direct.

31 July 2008 | Moving images
Charles Wood website The launch of an extensive portfolio site for Charles Wood the award-winning film production designer. It showcases his huge body of work on films such as Amazing Grace, The Italian Job and Laws of Attraction. It is an exclusive (password protected) site delivered to film directors and advertising creatives.

 

8 June 2008 | Building on solid foundations
After the success of the Sue Ryder Foundation website I am delighted to be commissioned to design the Irish Housing Associates’ site.

22 May 2008 | Real live!
The website for the company Reality Living goes live. A calm and clear design – reflecting Reality’s approach to health and well-being.

16 April 2008 | Style and content
Mari Williams A successful website launch for Mari Williams - the food stylist and writer. The design inspiration came from looking through American food advertising from the 1950s - this upbeat style expressed the personality of the client. The central site content, presented as two animated showreels, can be managed easily requiring no specialist skills by the site administrator.

10 April 2008 | Gaining access
The Access Expert - a database development company - have commissioned me to design their new website. The site must communicate their increasing involvement in web design as part of a widening package of services they offer their clients.

27 March 2008 | Design for life
The alternative health company Reality Living ask me to design and produce their website. The website will explain their approach to promoting health and well-being through pilates, reiki and Indian head massage. The brief is to create a tranquil and modern identity.

22 February 2008 | It’s a wrap!
The website for the photographer Toby Scott goes live. A neat site - in size and functionality. The images in the Flash showreel are easily updated by Toby, as are the client list and contact details. He can do this without any prior knowledge of Flash programming. RKO Digital did a great job of building this site.

Food writer and stylist Mari Williams invites me to update her identity, design her printed literature and website.

6 February 2008 | Snap decision
The photographer Toby Scott invites me to design his identity and portfolio website. Toby shoots still life and specializes in food and drink photography. Clients include Marks & Spencer and Sainsburys.

18 January 2008 | New Year resolution: Eat more!
...this resolution has been easy to start, after six days art directing on photoshoots for two recipe books. Thanks to Simon Smith and the rest of the team for a great job.

December 2007 | 2007: Growing organically
Building up to the end of the year projects have been coming in thick and fast. Two websites I designed have gone live (TomkinsIFA and At your service). I have begun work on an identity for an organic clothing and linen range and am close to completing the website for the Sue Ryder Foundation in Ireland.

12 November 2007 | Double helpings
I am contracted to work on two recipe books in Duncan Baird Publishers’ Health & Well-Being list. The design will be done in tandem, 288 pages in total. I will begin art directing the photography early in the New Year.

25 October 2007 | Money matters
After being recommended to the independent financial adviser Dylan Tomkins, I am awarded the contract to brand all online and printed literature. The project will start with the design and build of a new website and will be followed with the design of promotional print items.

4 September 2007 | Cast away
Duncan Baird Publishers ask me to design a new book concept to be presented at the Frankfurt Book Fair in October. It is a new title in their Health & Well-being list. The project involves casting for models, running the photoshoot and designing the the cover and sample spreads.

10 August 2007 | Blueprint for success
I am commissioned to design a series of communications to be used by local governments to target their stakeholders. Each local government will have their individual branding applied to the suite, so the package of designs include easy-to-update templates for newsletters, a step-by-step guidance publication and website.

24 July 2007 | A blank canvas
After a referral from one of my clients a small business start-up gets in touch to ask me to design their identity. It’s a fantastic brief, the company produces Matte Paintings for the film industry. Matte Paintings are used to create virtual sets and digital backlots. So a strong visual solution is a must.

25 June 2007 | Gone to market
Pompelmo.co.uk is now online and the marketing begins in earnest. I am contracted to start first with the design of direct mail, press promotion to follow shortly.

12 June 2007 | Up the Duffy!
The London-based graphic design studio Duffy commission me to work on a report for one of their major clients: CABE the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment. The design follows strict corporate guidelines and involves typesetting and layout.

16 May 2007 | Roll another six
These first six months of freelance work have been fantastic, I hope I will be as fortunate with the next six. I've put together a short review PDF, please click here to download it.

14 May 2007 | Don't mention it
Rule number one of marketing: Keep your site up to date. Well as you can see by my last entry I've broken that rule. So the missing entries would have mentioned working on the DBP book ‘Healing Mandalas’ – working closely with the illustrator to finalise the 30 artworks and typesetting it. I would have posted an entry or two about producing press adverts and stationery for various clients ... well there, it's done now.

After successfully branding the gift boutique Pompelmo, the company invite me to design their online shop, launching in April. Get your credit card at the ready...the site will sell a unique product range, distinct from the choice offered by generic high street outlets.

1 March 2007 | A gift of a job
For those of us who love to shop, briefs like this don't come along every day. An online contemporary gift boutique ask me to develop their brand. Due for launch later in the year.

5 February 2007 | Making their presence felt
MSD, the business continuity specialists, set the brief of designing and producing a series of large format banners for events and exhibitions.

1 February 2007 | Watch this space
The North Space design consultancy commission me to produce some initial concepts for one of their newest clients. The branding project is part of the agency’s expanding sustainability and public sector portfolio.

16 January 2007 | Buzz off!
I am very excited to be working with the author Gordon Green, designing his latest children's book entitled Buzz off! A book about a homeless and hapless bluebottle fly. I will be working closely with both Gordon and the illustrator Sholto Walker.

The business consultants Pragmatic Performance Management give me the task of designing the literature for some up and coming workshops.

6 December 2006 | 160 pages later
I am commissioned by Duncan Baird Publishers to design and typeset a 160 page reference book working with the illustrator Rowena Dugdale. Rowena will be producing 30 full page art works for the project. On a personal note it is great to be working with DBP again after all these years!

22 November 2006 | Now a two mac family
I finally accept that I have to update my ‘IT infrastructure’, so after much help and advice from friends I bite the bullet and buy the new G5 Intel Core duo all singing all dancing iMac.

Sage Associates ask me to pull together the structure and content ideas for two key proposals, both science sector clients and both web based projects – but each with their own challenges.
